HOW THE DAILY BUGLE REACHED THE WEB

By 25 September 2019 Sony Pictures had created TheDailyBugle.net, a working news site for the fictional show seen in the post-credits scene of Far From Home. It carried articles on the Night Monkey of Europe, Morris Bench (Hydro-Man) and a failed Area 51 raid, and a video of J. K. Simmons, returning as J. Jonah Jameson, calling Spider-Man a “menace.” The site promoted the film’s home release, which was due on 1 October.

The series is a faux current-affairs show produced by Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios and directed by Heather Traska and Jon Watts, with Season 1 released on YouTube.

SIX SHORT VIDEOS

WHAT THE FIRST SEASON COVERS

Six Season 1 episodes were released between 23 October and 20 November 2019, each between 24 seconds and 1 minute 12 seconds long. They run from Mysterio’s edited video of Spider-Man and a clip from the Tower Bridge attack, to Jameson calling Spider-Man a menace and a segment that exposes Peter Parker. The last two cover Coney Island reopening and a dispute between the UK and US governments over the cost of the Tower Bridge attack. Jake Gyllenhaal, Tom Holland and Tony Revolori appear in clips or footage.

A NEW KIND OF NEWSMAN

HOW JAMESON CHANGED

In July 2019 Watts pointed out that Simmons’s over-the-top Jameson from Sam Raimi’s films now has real-world comparisons, and Kevin Feige said real-world changes made it sensible to turn Jameson from a newspaper editor into a news personality who screams in front of the camera. In the film he is a re-imagined host of TheDailyBugle.net, and the web series carries that character on after the credits.

WHAT CRITICS SAID

Nerdist’s Eric Diaz, writing on 26 September 2019, called Simmons’s role a “real delight” and the website a “clever marketing push.” ComicBook.com’s Aaron Perine praised Simmons’s return on 3 October 2019, while Geek Tyrant’s Jessica Fisher called the first episode’s appearance “awesome but not jaw-dropping.”

THE REWATCH

A WEB SERIES THAT RETURNED

The series returned for a second season in November 2021, released mainly on TikTok, and a third season in March 2022. Its start date is sometimes given as 19 October 2019, but this page uses 23 October, the date of the first episode.

In the Marvel Marathon it is catalogued as MCU and sits in the MCU release order guide between Peter’s To-Do List and WandaVision, and in the MCU series order guide between WHIH Newsfront Season 2 and WandaVision. It also appears in the Marvel TV shows in order guide between Legion Season 3 and Runaways Season 3, and in the Spider-Man movies in order guide between Peter’s To-Do List and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. It is not in the MCU timeline guide.
