MARVEL MARATHON DEEP DIVE

DARRYL.
The third Team Thor mockumentary follows Darryl as he looks for a new flatmate with Thor away, and the only reply comes from Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster. It was a bonus feature on the Thor: Ragnarok home release.
A BONUS FEATURE ON THE RAGNAROK DISC
HOW A THIRD TEAM THOR REACHED HOME VIDEO
On 10 January 2018 the Thor: Ragnarok home release was announced for digital platforms on 20 February and DVD and Blu-ray on 6 March, with a “Marvel One-Shot style short film” about Darryl, Thor’s roommate. The same list of extras included deleted scenes, outtakes, making-of featurettes and a Taika Waititi commentary.
The six-minute short became available with the digital release on Tuesday 20 February 2018 in the US. The Team Thor shorts reached Disney+ as Marvel One-Shots in January 2022.
AN AD, AN EMPTY FLAT AND A FORMER RULER
WHO ANSWERS DARRYL’S ROOMMATE AD
The short opens with the Grandmaster fresh off being unseated as the ruler of Sakaar and making his way to Earth to start a new life. Darryl, who has struggled to pay his rent since Thor left Australia, advertises for a roommate, and the Grandmaster is the only person to reply. The story continues from the Thor: Ragnarok post-credits scene, in which he has been unseated, and finds Darryl looking for a replacement for the God of Thunder.
WAITITI AND GOLDBLUM RETURN
WHO MADE TEAM DARRYL
Taika Waititi wrote and directed, with Daley Pearson as Darryl Jacobson, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Rachel House as Topaz. Zach Campa plays a tech nerd.
Goldblum teased the short months earlier. In October 2017 he said he had shot “a thing with Taika,” adding:
“I might knock on your door, and say hello.”

THE REWATCH
A SIX-MINUTE PUNCHLINE FOR THE RAGNAROK ERA
Alexandra August of Comic Book Resources said the short was as funny as the earlier ones, “if a little (way) more disturbing.” Pearson later appeared as a New Asgard tour guide in Thor: Love and Thunder in 2022.
In the Marvel Marathon, Team Darryl sits in the MCU release order guide directly after Black Panther and directly before Avengers: Infinity War. It reads best after Team Thor and Team Thor: Part 2, which come earlier in that guide, and after Thor: Ragnarok.
QUICK ANSWERS
TEAM DARRYL WATCH QUESTIONS
Do I need to watch Team Thor first?
It is worth doing. Team Darryl is the third short in the series and assumes you know who Darryl is, so the jokes land better after Team Thor and Team Thor: Part 2.
Do I need to see Thor: Ragnarok first?
Yes. The short continues from the film’s post-credits scene and its main joke relies on the Grandmaster, so it is best watched afterwards.
Where was Team Darryl released?
It came with the Thor: Ragnarok home release, which reached digital platforms on 20 February 2018 and DVD and Blu-ray on 6 March 2018.
Which Marvel Marathon guides include Team Darryl?
It appears in the MCU release order guide, directly after Black Panther and directly before Avengers: Infinity War. It is not in the movies-only, series or timeline guides. Marking it watched above updates your progress there and on the main tracker.
