MARVEL MARATHON DEEP DIVE
SPIDER-MAN
FAR FROM HOME
Spider-Man: Far From Home opened in the US on 2 July 2019, with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker on a school trip to Europe after Avengers: Endgame. It was the last film of Phase Three and the first Spider-Man film to pass $1 billion.

A SEQUEL TO HOMECOMING
HOW FAR FROM HOME CAME TOGETHER
Sony and Marvel Studios were committed to further Spider-Man films, Jon Watts was confirmed to return in December 2017, and Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers were confirmed as writers in May 2018. Sony slated the sequel for 5 July 2019, a date that complicated Marvel’s secrecy plans around Endgame; the US date later moved up to 2 July.
Watts said the film began from three building blocks: the fallout from Endgame, a European road trip and Mysterio.
ENGLAND, EUROPE AND NEW JERSEY
HOW THE FILM WAS SHOT
Principal photography began on 2 July 2018 in Hertfordshire, England, under the working title Fall of George, then moved to Prague, Liberec and Venice before New York City and Newark, New Jersey. Filming wrapped on 16 October 2018. The budget was $160 million, Michael Giacchino composed the score, and Jake Gyllenhaal’s casting as Mysterio was confirmed around June 2018.
Watts described the world the film enters as one with a power vacuum, which shapes Mysterio’s role:
“people looking for the next Iron Man.”
