A FOURTH FILM AND A NEW DIRECTOR

HOW THE FILM REACHED THE SCREEN

Sony was developing a fourth MCU Spider-Man film by August 2019, the month negotiations with Marvel briefly broke down before a new deal was reached at the end of September. Amy Pascal described it in November 2021 as the first film in a new trilogy starring Holland, writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers had returned by February 2023, and work paused during the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. Jon Watts chose not to return as director, Holland and Cretton were confirmed at the end of October 2024, and Holland announced the title by video message at CinemaCon in March 2025.

Principal photography began on 3 August 2025 in Glasgow under the working title Blue Oasis, with the city centre standing in for New York, before moving to Pinewood Studios and locations around London. Filming paused from 19 to 29 September after Holland suffered a mild concussion during a stunt, wrapped on 19 December 2025, and was followed by additional photography in April 2026. The budget was $225 million, and Michael Giacchino returned as composer.

Tom Holland plays Peter Parker, with Zendaya as MJ, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Tramell Tillman as Bill Metzger, Marisa Tomei as May Parker and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, with Michael Mando returning as Mac Gargan, also known as Scorpion.

The film premiered at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on 27 July 2026 and opened in the US on 31 July, a week later than first planned, to avoid The Odyssey. It opened to $360,091,572 in the US and went on to earn $958,776,568 there and $2,519,512,338 worldwide. The opening was the highest of all time in the US and Canada, passing Avengers: Endgame. The film became the highest-grossing release of all time in the US and Canada on 15 September, and it is the third-highest-grossing film of all time worldwide.

In the post-credits scene, Ned’s “Spidey Tracker” app detects a Spider-Man sighting away from Earth.

A 90% CRITICS SCORE AND AN A FROM AUDIENCES

Rotten Tomatoes lists a 90% critics’ score from 439 reviews and a 97% audience score, and its consensus calls the film “a promising reset.” Metacritic gives it 66 from 56 critics and a user score of 7.9, and audiences polled by CinemaScore gave it an A. David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter praised its “adrenaline and feeling,” while David Ehrlich of IndieWire gave it a C− and called it a “dull and downbeat action sequel.”

In the Marvel Marathon it sits in the MCU release order guide between The Punisher: One Last Kill and VisionQuest. It sits between The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Avengers: Doomsday in the MCU movies in order and Marvel movies in release order guides, and it follows Spider-Noir Season 1 in the Spider-Man movies in order guide.
