HOW SHE-HULK WAS MADE

Marvel Studios announced a She-Hulk series at the D23 conference in August 2019 and hired Jessica Gao as head writer in November 2019. Kat Coiro was hired to direct in September 2020, Anu Valia joined by December 2020, and Coiro ultimately directed six episodes and Valia three. Tatiana Maslany’s casting was officially announced in December 2020, after she had denied it earlier.

Filming began on 12 April 2021 at Trilith Studios in Atlanta and ran into August 2021, under working titles including Libra, and Amie Doherty composed the score. The budget was reported to be $225 million, a figure the studio has not confirmed.

WHAT THE SERIES IS ABOUT

Walters gains the ability to break the fourth wall after becoming a Hulk, and Marvel Studios felt early versions of the device were used too much. Critics were mixed on the finale, with Amelia Emberwing of IGN writing that the sitcom format and fourth-wall breaks “fall apart” there, and Kirsten Howard of Den of Geek finding the device “jarring” in places.

Brad Winderbaum said in April 2026 that the series “was actually one of Marvel Studios’ best performing series in terms of viewership,” despite an online response that suggested it was not well liked.

Tatiana Maslany plays Jennifer Walters, with Jameela Jamil as Mary MacPherran, or Titania, Ginger Gonzaga as Nikki Ramos, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Josh Segarra as Augustus Pugliese, Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky, Renée Elise Goldsberry as Mallory Book, Benedict Wong as Wong and Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock. Megan Thee Stallion appears as a client, playing a fictionalised version of herself.

HOW THE SERIES WAS RECEIVED

The nine episodes ran from “A Normal Amount of Rage” on 18 August 2022 to “Whose Show Is This?” on 13 October 2022, with runtimes from 31 to 38 minutes. The first trailer was criticised for its visual effects, and reviews were mixed on the finished effects, with Variety finding them an improvement over the trailers and The Verge and USA Today calling them distracting.

Rotten Tomatoes lists a 77% critics’ score from 612 reviews and a 32% audience score, and its consensus says the series “passes the bar for bingeworthy viewing.” Metacritic gives it 67 from 26 critics and a user score of 2.9. Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter called it “broad, bright and eager to serve the audience with a wink and a nudge,” while Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times said it “plays like a 21st century take on a 1980s TV show.”

A CRITICS’ CHOICE WIN AND AN OPEN SECOND SEASON

Maslany won a Critics’ Choice Super Award as best actress in a superhero series, and the series drew nominations from the Visual Effects Society, the People’s Choice Awards and others. The finale’s mid-credits scene has Wong breaking Blonsky out of prison. Maslany said in January 2024 that “I think we blew our budget, and Disney was like ‘No thanks!’” Winderbaum expressed interest in continuing the story in April 2026.

In the Marvel Marathon it sits in the MCU release order guide between Thor: Love and Thunder and Werewolf by Night. It sits between Ms. Marvel and Secret Invasion in the MCU series order and Marvel TV shows in order guides. In the MCU timeline guide it comes between Echo and Ms. Marvel.
