A SECOND SEASON OF A TIME-TRAVELLING DRAMA
HOW THE SEASON WAS MADE
The second season was confirmed through a mid-credits scene in the Season 1 finale in July 2021. Eric Martin was head writer and wrote all six episodes, and Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead were hired in February 2022 to direct a majority of them, with Dan DeLeeuw and Kasra Farahani directing one episode each. Kate Herron did not return because she had always planned to be involved for only one season.
Principal photography began on 13 June 2022 at Pinewood Studios and concluded in October, with location filming in London and at the Chatham Historic Dockyard in Kent. The gross budget was $176.8 million, Natalie Holt returned as composer, and the season was the first Marvel Studios project to undergo no additional photography.

The cast includes Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Sophia Di Martino as Sylvie, Owen Wilson as Mobius, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ravonna Renslayer, Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15, Eugene Cordero as Casey, Rafael Casal as Hunter X-5, Kate Dickie as General Dox, Liz Carr as Judge Gamble and Ke Huy Quan as Ouroboros, or O.B. Jonathan Majors plays Victor Timely and He Who Remains.
Majors’ appearance was not altered despite his legal issues that began in March 2023.
A RECORD PREMIERE
HOW THE SEASON WAS RECEIVED
The six episodes ran from “Ouroboros” on 5 October 2023 to “Glorious Purpose” on 9 November 2023, with runtimes from 47 to 59 minutes. Disney+ revealed that “Ouroboros” had 10.9 million views worldwide in its first three days, the second most-watched season premiere on the service in 2023 behind The Mandalorian Season 3. Whip Media reported it as the most-streamed original series in the US for three weeks in October 2023.
Rotten Tomatoes lists an 82% critics’ score from 179 reviews and an 83% audience score, and its consensus says the season “contains enough of that old Marvel magic to entertain.” Metacritic gives it 65 from 23 critics and a user score of 7.3. Siddhant Adlakha of Vulture called Natalie Holt’s score “the only perfect positive of Loki across the two seasons,” while Joshua Rivera of Polygon panned the season as “a jumble of confusing plot lines.”
THE REWATCH
A PEOPLE’S CHOICE WIN AND THREE EMMY NOMINATIONS
The season won a People’s Choice Award for sci-fi and fantasy show of the year and received three Creative Arts Emmy nominations, for costumes, sound mixing and visual effects, with no Emmy wins. The post-credits scene of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania reuses footage from the episode “1893.”
