MARVEL MARATHON DEEP DIVE
DAREDEVIL
SEASON 3
Daredevil returned to Netflix on 19 October 2018 under new showrunner Erik Oleson, with all 13 episodes at once. It drew on the Born Again comic and earned a 97% critics’ score.

A NEW SHOWRUNNER AFTER SEASON 2
HOW THE THIRD SEASON WAS MADE
Marvel and Netflix announced a third season at San Diego Comic-Con in 2016, and in October 2017 Erik Oleson was named to replace Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez as showrunner. Filming began on 13 November 2017 in New York City, with a week in Windham, New York, in March 2018 standing in for Fagan Corners, Vermont, and wrapped by mid-June 2018. All 13 episodes were released on 19 October 2018, in 4K.
Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson and Vincent D’Onofrio return, with Wilson Bethel as Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter, Joanne Whalley as Maggie Grace, Jay Ali as Ray Nadeem, and Ayelet Zurer returning as a guest.
A COMIC RUN AS THE STARTING POINT
WHAT THE SEASON TAKES FROM BORN AGAIN
The season adapts elements of the Born Again storyline, which the end of The Defenders had hinted at, while Oleson wrote an original story. He said on 23 October 2018 that the season would “draw from some of their favorite comic runs and mine, ‘Born Again,’” in a tone that reflected his own interests. He summed up the central threat in a line:
“Fisk and Bullseye, together, outgun Matt Murdock and Daredevil.”

A PRISON FIGHT WITHOUT A CUT
HOW THE EPISODE 4 SEQUENCE WAS STAGED
Episode 4, “Blindsided,” contains a prison-escape fight filmed as a single continuous shot. Director Alex García López, writer Lewaa Nasserdeen and the stunt team conceived it. Oleson called it “the sequence I am most proud of in my entire career” and said, “It is a true oner.”
A STRONG RETURN TO FORM
A 97% CRITICS SCORE AND A SATURN AWARD
Rotten Tomatoes lists a 97% critics’ score from 67 reviews and an 87% audience score, and its consensus says “the Man with No Fear returns to top form.” Metacritic gives it 71 from only six critics. The season won the Saturn Award for Best Streaming Superhero Series in 2019 and received a Screen Actors Guild nomination for its stunt ensemble.
THE REWATCH
A CANCELLATION AFTER THREE SEASONS
Netflix cancelled the series on 29 November 2018. Netflix’s statement said that “the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come” and that “the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel.”
In the Marvel Marathon it is catalogued as Marvel Television and sits in the Marvel TV shows in order guide between The Gifted Season 2 and Runaways Season 2, and in the MCU timeline guide between Iron Fist Season 2 and Thor: Ragnarok. It is not in the MCU release-order, series or movie guides.
QUICK ANSWERS
DAREDEVIL SEASON 3 WATCH QUESTIONS
Do I need to watch Seasons 1 and 2 first?
Yes. Season 3 builds on the Kingpin’s story from the first season and on Matt Murdock’s losses in The Defenders, so the earlier seasons are the best preparation.
Do I need to watch The Defenders first?
It is strongly recommended, since Season 3 begins in the aftermath of its ending.
Why was Daredevil cancelled?
Netflix announced on 29 November 2018 that the series would not return for a fourth season, saying the three seasons would stay on the service and that the character would live on in future Marvel projects. The statement gave no detailed reason.
Which Marvel Marathon guides include Daredevil Season 3?
It appears in the Marvel TV shows in order guide, between The Gifted Season 2 and Runaways Season 2, and in the MCU timeline guide, between Iron Fist Season 2 and Thor: Ragnarok. Its catalogue entry is classed as Marvel Television rather than MCU, so it is not in the MCU release-order, series or movie guides.
