A SHORTER SEASON FOR SUMMER

HOW THE SIXTH SEASON REACHED ABC

ABC renewed the series on 14 May 2018 for a sixth season of 13 episodes. Filming began on 16 July 2018 in Culver City, California, and had wrapped by 18 December 2018. The premiere, “Missing Pieces,” aired on 10 May 2019, and the last two episodes aired together on 2 August 2019.

Jeffrey Bell said on 10 May 2019 that the shorter order let the writers build the season as a single piece: “this thirteen can be its own piece.”

TWO STORIES AT ONCE

WHAT THE SEASON IS ABOUT

The season is set one year after the fifth, with Mack leading S.H.I.E.L.D. while Fitz is held in space by the Chronicoms and Simmons, Daisy and the others search for him. On Earth, a new antagonist the show calls Sarge, who looks like Phil Coulson, leads a team, and a mercenary named Izel possesses people and is tied to the monoliths. Jed Whedon said the writers wanted the show to find its own ground in space:

“no one doesn’t want to play around in space!”

WHO IS IN THE CAST

Clark Gregg plays Sarge and Coulson, with Ming-Na Wen as Melinda May, Chloe Bennet as Daisy Johnson, Iain De Caestecker as Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Simmons, Henry Simmons as Mack, Natalia Cordova-Buckley as Yo-Yo and Jeff Ward as Deke Shaw, who was promoted to the main cast from recurring. The recurring cast includes Karolina Wydra as Izel, Joel Stoffer as Enoch and Maximilian Osinski as Davis. Gregg also directed the premiere.

A SMALL AUDIENCE AND A STRONG SCORE

WHAT THE RATINGS AND REVIEWS SHOW

Nielsen figures put the premiere at 2.31 million live viewers and a 0.4 rating among adults 18 to 49, or 3.63 million viewers with DVR, and the season averaged 2.25 million viewers including DVR. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 93% critics’ score from 15 reviews and a 90% audience score, and its consensus says that six seasons in the show “continues to deepen its exploration of space.”

THE REWATCH

A SEVENTH SEASON AND AN ANNOUNCED END

ABC renewed the series for a seventh season on 16 November 2018, with another 13 episodes expected. The end was confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con on 18 July 2019, when Marvel Television’s Jeph Loeb said: “We want to end on a very high note and complete the incredible saga after seven amazing seasons.”

In the Marvel Marathon it is catalogued as Marvel Television and sits in the Marvel TV shows in order guide between Cloak & Dagger Season 2 and Jessica Jones Season 3. It is not in the MCU timeline guide or the MCU release-order and series guides.
